The QIWI Group was established in 2007 based on two payment systems — e-port and OSMP. Today, QIWI is a universal payment service that possesses the most popular and convenient tools and technologies to pay for services of more than 54,000 providers. It includes a terminal network, a convenient e-wallet, virtual and plastic bank cards that open up easy access to all types of payments. At the moment, the number of transactions is over 12 million per day.
The QIWI team is located in 32 Russian and 7 overseas offices. Due to the requirement to provide flexibility in deploying company services, a need arose to virtualize its IT landscape. The Group's management considered the possibility of hosting services in the third-party cloud infrastructure. However, the cost analysis clearly showed that owning its own virtual infrastructure would be more profitable for QIWI compared to renting.
In this project QIWI partnered with Softline, whose specialists carried out a test implementation of existing virtualization tools from various manufacturers. Based on the comparison, a decision was made to use VMware products. A test operation showed that VMware products optimally meet QIWI requirements based on the IT environment specifics: a high-load, heterogeneous, and dynamic environment.
VMware vSphere with Operations Management provides a primary administration console for the vSphere environment that allows the creation and management of virtual solutions. With easy-to-use monitoring tools, workflow coordination, performance data visualization, and resource optimization capabilities, administrators can make the most of their existing infrastructure and keep critical business applications running smoothly.
The project consisted of two parts: the first one was a pilot implementation that took four months and included services that were not directly affecting the company's business processes. The second part was a full-scale implementation that took about six months and allowed QIWI IT infrastructure to be completely transferred into a virtual environment.
The implementation resulted in the process optimization during the implementation of new projects and the corresponding cost minimization, as well as greater service fault tolerance. The use of VMware products has reduced the time to deploy virtual servers for new tasks from several months to two days.
“Virtualization is an integral part of the IT infrastructure of modern business. Meeting the needs of such a large high-tech company like QIWI requires the most advanced and reliable virtualization tools. Implementation of vSphere with Operations Manager will ensure the maximum performance of hardware solutions and, as a result, reduce the company's capital and operating expenditures on IT infrastructure,” –
